Viewing people as if they were separate from us means we see them as a threat to our sense of self which makes it more difficult for us to completely trust them. 
Realizing that we are all part of the same universal spirit, however, lets us place our trust more fully in others. 
Once we recognize that they have experienced the same emotions and thoughts as we have, the boundaries that seem to divide us dissipate.
