A Five Minute Mental Break : The Comfort of Your Misery

_____________________________________
_______________________________________________

Most people want to go somewhere with their lives but they aren’t willing to leave the comfort of their miseries.

A better life is an unknown life factor for many people. If we don’t understand how to achieve a better life, we find ourselves compromising for a less than adequate existence. You don’t have to settle for less if you’re willing to take the first step.

But, if you don’t take the first step to create a better life, you’ll have to settle for less than you deserve.

One day, I was at the lake walking along the dock and looking at the beautiful boats. All of a sudden, there was a “thud” followed by the straining of a boat’s engine. The vessel’s driver forgot to unlatch his boat from the dock before pulling away.

This incident reminded me of how many, good hearted people, handle their lives and desires. They want more but are not willing to unlatch themselves from their current uncertainty and confusion.

If you really want more out of life, it is time you decide specifically the “results” you choose to obtain and by all means, take the first step and commit to making it happen.

Anyone can dream about a better life but very few people are willing to take a chance on themselves to create their dream life. This is the reason why so many people think of life as a struggle.

Life is a struggle when you want something more but you’re stuck to the dock of your current existence. Holding onto a life that is less than what you desire is not security, it is insanity. Take a chance on living more life. Take a risk on yourself.

I would rather risk and lose, but thereby experience more livingness, than never to have risked at all. As the author and artist, Flora Whittemore shared long ago, “The doors we open and close each day decide the lives we live.”

Are you living the life you want or are you compromising yourself for the comfort of your current confusion? You have a choice, but you’ll need to take a risk on yourself to do better.

Take a chance on your life and put everything you have into your dream. When we place our full selves into our life purpose, success is inevitable.

That beautiful, tortured, incredibly talented and lonely person that was Michael Jackson has made the transition. His unfortunate addiction to prescription drugs tipped him over the edge; when the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak that's what happens.

He is at peace now and as I believe in reincarnation, I can say with certainty that a another was born at the moment he died and he will be back in another guise.
My tribute here to The Music Maestro lest we forget in the months and years to come.

Growing up
I was forced to give
Never encouraged to live
But that's when you have parents who never lived
Now that I'm forced to live
To the fullest point imaginable
It's painful and I'm irascible

Now I see with the deepest love
And gratitude to the One above
The Source
That receiving is love

Trusting Your Life to Unfold Perfectly | The Ultimate Spiritual Act

Best Blogger Tips
Trust your life to unfold perfectly by Martha Beck is the final segment in Getting your life back on track from Oprah's Spirit Newsletter.  Sign up for it people.

She is the best female coach I have ever encountered; super smart, down-to-earth, incisive, insightful and funny. I love people like that.

Trust and letting go

You can achieve non-attachment by letting go and having faith that that which you yearn for will be fulfilled. It does not mean becoming a martyr and sighing and boring everyone to tears because what you want isn't coming to pass. Believe that what you want will happen.

Most of us were taught that in order to get something we have to "work hard". It is important to recognise therefore that the mental focus and doing what you can to bring you towards your goal, no matter how small, is part of the proces.

Martha says that if we can master letting go and trust in the process, amazing and seemingly miraculous things occur to fulfill our soul's desires.

Learning to see with new eyes

But what happens when we can't trust anymore. With all the hard knocks in life, we become wary and untrusting and usually expect the worst. And when fortune smiles on us, we reject it out of hand.

Because we're coming from a place that cannot see it for what it is or dare not trust what our eyes tell us. We fall back on our doubting, suspicious minds.

Blocked trust is the reason for blighted dreams and Ms Beck proposes two exercises to get back us back on the trusting train.

Re-learning trust in the process

Exercise 1: choose something that you know will come true; make sure it's coming from deep within and that it's something simple that you like and want - like flowers or music.

Then deliberately trust that this desire will be fulfilled. Don't spend time thinking about it; just let it go and act as if you already have it. Your trust will be rewarded.

I know it seems silly and you can't figure it out. But you see, when a desire comes from your core, it's a soul desire and it's real. Your subconscious mind knows this and will act to bring you what you desire by the quickest means possible.

Exercise 2: Make a list of every desire you have ever had in the past which was realised. Then try to remember how each of them happened whether by luck, coincidence, the generosity of others, an idea from out of the blue, and so on.

When you through with the list, you will have the proof that your life has been linked to a chain of miraculous delights which you never noticed before.

So what are you waiting for? Go get your life back on track and live it to the hilt!

Here are the three previous posts in this series: Become a well of stillness, Find your inner strength and get free, and Feeling your soul's desires.

Chris Brown - That Sack of Pure Shite

Best Blogger Tips

This Chris Brown and Rihanna affair bothers the heck out of me because women rarely get a fair deal in abuse cases, and definitely not in domestic violence cases; not by the legal system or by the judges in the case.

A plea bargain is not what was needed here; the case was too high profile and the judgement handed down is sending the wrong signal! That boy has gotten off far too lightly!

Female batterers get a slap on the wrist like - don't do that again ... for the umpteenth time when they appear in court. And therein lies the problem. The police and judicial system as a whole do not consider violence against women to be outrageous, which is what it is!

Of course, my reaction to the sack of shit changed my vibration immediately which is really what pissed me off because the uneducated and the racists will always be around until we all assume responsibility for our thoughts, words and deeds.

I am very grateful to no longer be as hot-headed as I was when I lived in New York City. Back then I always had an 18 cm (6 inches) long antique hat pin stuck in my clothing as my weapon of choice and I had no reservations about using it if I was ever attacked.

Feeling Your Soul's Desire and Having Yearnings Fulfilled

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
Best Blogger Tips
And here I am again with step 3 Feel Your Soul's Desires from Martha Beck's "Taking Your Life Back". This step is primordial and was key to getting my life back on track.

It felt like returning home to a warm, loving embrace that I hadn't experienced in so long that I'd forgotten about it and now that I'm back, I don't want to leave again.

I hope it's the same for you as well. I strongly advise that you complete the exercise at the bottom of this post.

So, why do we expect so much from others? How could anyone possibly know what we want when we don't express it in clear, unambiguous terms.

People are not mind readers yet there is this constant dissatisfaction when non-verbalized, unspecified needs aren't met.

We don't really know what we want, Beck says. We know that something's missing but we don't know what it is. We're seeking...

The obstacles to our progress are our minds which function within the narrow confines programmed by our families and cultures from the cradle. The soul tells us what we want and need, the mind tells us what we think we need.

At this stage, it is time to clarify and specify our soul's needs and stop listening to our obsessive minds. She puts it like this:
The soul knows I want freedom from worry, the mind thinks I want to win the lottery

The soul says I want to feel connected with all things, the mind translates  I need the perfect, romantic soul mate to make me feel connected.

Become still and go within to the silence. There we can feel the deep, abiding passion and conviction of the soul's desire. The mind's needs tend to feel frantic, panicked and grasping.

When you feel this way, breathe deeply a few times  to centre yourself, then let go deep enter your well of stillness to identify what your soul truly desires.

One way to identify your soul's desires

Get a sheet of paper and at the top, write Things I want. Fill the page with everything you want: a better job, to be size 6, win the lottery, etc. When you're finished get a new sheet of paper.

At the top, write Things I yearn for and start writing. When you're finished compare the two lists. Martha says you will find that what appears on this list is completely different from the Things I want list; that was created by your mind.

The logical mind wants a car because – we yearn for freedom and mobility; we want hot sex because – we yearn for intimacy; we want to be beautiful because – we yearn for acceptance.

You need to get clear on one thing: the needs of soul or Inner Being is always right.

Don't get caught up in how your yearnings will be fulfilled. Accept them for what they are for now and relax. Whatever you try in your current mindset probably won't work... because cars, sex and beauty don't automatically lead to freedom, intimacy and acceptance.

Allow yourself to be comfortable with not knowing and the more you let go of the "how", the faster your deepest desires will come to you, and they will. It seems like magic but it is very natural indeed.

I'm having some amazing experiences from following Martha Beck's advice; they are incredibly satisfying.

Now go to it people and then continue with the last in the 4-part series, Trust your life to unfold perfectly.

Find Your Inner Strength and Get Free

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
Best Blogger Tips
This is Martha Beck's second of four articles on Getting your life back on track, Know the Truth.

In truth, no pun intended, it's all about conquering your fear in order to begin the healing process and become who you are. Inner strength can only be found on the inside.

What is your truth and why is it necessary to face it, own it and express it? Martha says it represents freedom and I'm sure many of you can relate to that, scary though it sounds. It's important to accept one's self.

It doesn't matter how uncomfortable you feel you know, just the fact of saying "I am responsible for ..." lifts a weight off your shoulder and starts a positive change reaction in your life.

I had just such an experience which I describe in Schlepping to the well of stillness.

Hidden truths cement negative situations.

How often have you lied just to keep the peace, remained silent when someone was cruel, or said that you were okay in a particular situation when in fact you were not?

Making others feel alright when you are not is the worst of lies. Don't you think it's time you stopped and owned up to your feelings?

Truth is always scary.

Change feels scary too and yet, only good comes from both but you won't know until you take that first step. Open up to the truths that are affecting your life.

Were you an abused child; are you nurturing a long-held grudge against someone; do you suspect your spouse is being unfaithful but you're afraid to bring it up? Whatever it is, let it out!

Go within - to your well of stillness.

Being quiet is the only way to get to the real heart of the matter. When you're there write down these statements and complete them honestly:
  1. What I really don't want to know is that ...
  2. I'm avoiding looking at the fact that ...
  3. The absolute bottom line truth about my life is...
  4. The thing I'm avoiding thinking about is...
The feelings are going to rise, your heart is going to hurt and the tears are going to fall and you're going to feel like running away; don't.

Stay with the feelings in the stillness; they will peak then gently fade away. The cleansing and the feeling of peace at the end is amazing.

So end's Martha's wisdom. It is all about you honey, no one else. You'll soon be tapping into an inner strength you didn't know you had!

See the truth of your life with an honest eye.

Here's step 3, Feeling your soul's desires.

Schlepping to The Well of Stillness and Hoping It's Not Dry

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
Best Blogger Tips

Be still and bloom
I recently experienced this running away from myself that Martha Beck talks about in Becoming Still

I thought I didn't know how to handle a situation that unreasonably terrorized me. So I found myself schlepping to my stillness well, as I call it, to get some help because no one and nothing outside of me was able to.

My Mother's Habits

The worst part is that this fear has always been with me; and it was shocking to realise how much I had patterned my reactions on my mother's habits observed as a child.

We were very poor for a few years after the father of her four children walked out. She had no money, a huge house and 4 small children and one adolescent to care for. I have never been in her situation yet I react as she did then, whenever money is an issue. Is that scary or what!

Whining

Of course, logic dictates that there is always a solution to a problem. I knew that if I spent some quiet time and reconnected with Source I would be able tap into my well of stillness. But I kept avoiding that. Like a lot of people, it's hard getting off the rocky path once you set foot upon it.

But I could not continue like that indefinitely. It is impossible to maintain such a high level of fear which makes you desperate. It was do or die. So I decided to do something, anything.
I was fed up with whining; I hate whining - even my own!

I accepted Canfield's premise that if I changed my reaction (R) to the event (E) I would get a different outcome (O) - (E + R = O).

Be Still and Bloom

Silva Method
I had finally accepted full responsibility for my actions regardless of how it came about.

So what was the problem again?

Fear of not being enough, lack of self worth... never tackled until now. All coming from lessons learnt observing my mother more than forty years ago! That was my running away story folks.

Becoming A Well of Stillness: Go Within and Let Go

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
Best Blogger Tips
I have just finished reading Martha Beck's article Your best life is waiting in Oprah's Spirit Newsletter.

She is so smart, down-to-earth and funny, I gobble up everything she writes.

Her article covers a theme close to my heart reconnecting to self and getting your life back on track. She covers this in 4 steps:
  • becoming still
  • know the "truth"
  • feel your soul's desires, and
  • trust your life to unfold perfectly.
Going within and becoming still

Let's talk about the first step. Why is becoming still or going within so important? Because we can't hear ourselves think, feel, need and yearn for our true heart's desires with all the noise around us

Martha Beck says that a lot of us try to flee ourselves by doing busy work or talk, talk, talking in order not to be alone with silence or with ourselves. Our biggest hurdle to reconnecting with self is our emotions.

Become the observer, go within to your well of stillness, and let go.

None of us want to feel things which make us uncomfortable. But Eckhart Tolle in A New Earth advises that we do exactly that. Let those feelings out. Don't hang onto them.  Step back and become the observer.

Watch those painful feelings rise, expand and then gradually fade away into nothingness: they will if you let them be. It feels so great to let that garbage go!

I experience this when I meditate or just sit or lie somewhere quietly for twenty minutes or so. That is what I call my "well of stillness".

Martha Beck has a wonderful visualization technique to guide you inward and it's worth trying. It's in the same article under the heading Get Still.

Feel free to go on to step two, find your inner strength (know your truth).

In closing, I'll leave you with this very apt quote from Mother Teresa.

We need to find god, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass - grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence … We need silence to be able to touch souls.

Is Fear of Change Making You Blow Smoke?

James M Lynch has another thought-provoking post Blowing Smoke but not exactly the way you think.

Are you a "but head" and do you know people who are? You know "yes, but ..."  That's what Lynch's latest post is about. The procrastination and refusals that start with ...I'm not sure... well, maybe but... although... conventional wisdom says... Here's how he puts it:
BUT -- this is a word I could just as well do without. It stops more projects before they even hit the planning stage than it creates. A rule I heard once encouraged us to replace the word but with the word "and". It became a way to suggest better planning than a discouragement and road block.

Create Emotional Space Within and Reconnect with Your Inner Being

AddThis Social Bookmark Button
Best Blogger Tips
Updated 20 October '09 with another technique.

More and more people are feeling the need for their own space; they demand it in fact. A lot believe that it's just physical space which does bring some ease, but that's only part of it.

This urge wells from deep within us demanding that we reconnect once more with who we really are - with our Inner Being.  Here are 6 effective techniques that clear out the emotional clutter that create toxins in your body:

1. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

EFT is soft finger tapping on specific meridians of the body - exactly like acupuncture but without the needles. It is used together with particular phrases to based on your feelings to get to the root of the problem.

What is interesting about EFT is that it usually brings up old memories and forgotten feelings and experiences which are often linked to the emotional problem that is making you unhappy.

EFT brings consistent relief and closure. The feelings around each issue that you want to clear is gradually exposed like layers of an onion; then aired and cleared one after the other.

If you don't believe you can handle the emotions that arise if you intend to do EFT on your own, then find an EFT practitioner in your area; because once that genie is out, there is no putting it back in. EFT also works through phone consultations.

Two of my favourite EFT experts are Brad Yates and Magnus. Magnus' video explains how EFT works. at They are funny yet mindful, down-to-earth and "connected". Use their free videos to deal with issues like self-acceptance, procrastination, stress, waking up, tapping into your own brilliance, limiting beliefs about self and money, weight loss, and many more.

2. The Sedona Method

It's such a short and simple technique yet so effective. I don't understand why it works yet it does. The technique is composed of 3 questions: Could I let go ... would I let go... and when would I let go... A free, downloadable mp3 file is available.  Get your free copy and see if it's for you.

3. The Silva Ultramind Method

Another free mp3 is available here too of the Silva Centering Method with 7 free lessons included. This method helps you to re-centre yourself by harmonizing the left and right brain.

I've never experienced anything like it; it keeps you in an awake, meditative state so you don't zone out or fall asleep.

With this method you are able to focus your mind on solving problems; setting and visualizing goals, and strengthening your intuition.

The Silva method of problem solving is worth it's weight in gold. Classes, seminars and conventions are other ways of learning about the Silva Method.

4. The Daisy Pond Meditation

Burt Goldman aka The American Monk has created this sublime meditation technique. It's so smooth that after listening to it a few times, you tend to find yourself gliding spontaneously into his Daisy Pond at times. Well, I do anyway.

There's one caveat - although it's free - you must sign up to his programme (also free) in order to get it.

5. Tapas Acupressure Technique - TAT - for Releasing Traumatic Memories

When I originally wrote this post, I had no experience with TAT. That has now changed and I was blown away by the results. Here is the story of how I got rid of my emotional clutter with TAT.

TAT uses two acupressure points on the face and is taken from Chinese medecine.  It was created by Tapas Fleming. Based on testimonials from army vets and active personnel, it is very effective for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Here's how it works:

(a) Focus on the negative feeling
(b) Hold the pose as described in this TAT demonstration video, then
(c) Let the memory go.

Simple as that. It works quickly. Repeat as desired for a maximum of twenty minutes only. Have a look at Fleming's TATLife site to find out what else it does.

6. Four-minute Reprogramming of the Subconscious
Regina Murphy, an EFT practitioner in Nevada, demonstrates this four-minute reprogramming technique which she claims reprogrames the subconscious. I use it often. Now, I don't know if it's reprogramming anything and it is not EFT, but it does something. I feel so soft and peaceful and still inside afterwards.

I'm always searching for techniques that are free, simple, easy, non-intrusive and effective in my quest for vibrant health on all levels. So I will continue sharing!

7. The Core Energy Technique: How to Release Unwanted Thoughts, Feelings or Beliefs

This Core Energy Technique is sublimely effective. I use it almost every day and it is quite short. It reconnects you to your spacious Inner Being, simply and wonderfully and it's marvelous. Sign up to get access.

Kevin Schoeninger, the Technique's creator, was giving away the Core Energy Meditation; only shipping and handling needed to be paid.  I highly advise that you get it. However, I don't know if it's still available.

Try any one of these techniques and let me know how it goes!
