Cutting the Emotional Cords that Bind and Weigh You Down

Every time I find myself caught up in a twisty knot of my emotions, I end up finding techniques to unknot myself.

In this case, an unsatisfactory relationship in which I can't seem to get rid of the guy, and I know it's a karmic relationship which I have healed as much as I am able and so I feel it's time to move on.  

Madisyn Taylor, co-founder of DailyOM describes cutting those emotional cords that bind. Meditation, visualization and  focus are the simple tools you need to rid yourself of the emotional baggage weighing you down.
A Sense of Closure

In every relationship, people are constantly exchanging energy that can become a chord connecting two people. This energetic cord forms just below the breastbone and can remain long after a relationship has ended. This unbroken cord may leave an open channel between you and another person, through which emotions and energy can continue to flow.
If you are unaware that the chord exists, it is easy to feel the other person’s emotions and mistakenly think that they are yours.
Besides the fact that this can limit the amount of closure you can experience in a relationship, letting this cord remain intact can leave you with a continued sense of sadness while creating feelings of lethargy as your own energy is sapped from you.
Cutting the cord can help you separate yourself from old baggage, unnecessary attachments, and release you from connections that are no longer serving you.
Finding and cutting unwanted cords is a simple, gentle process that is best done alone and when you are relaxed. It is important that you are strong in your intention to release the chord between you and someone else.
To begin, breathe deeply and perform a simple centering meditation. When you are ready, visualize or sense the chords that are connecting you to other people.
Run your fingers through the cords to separate them until you find the cord you wish to sever. There is no need to worry, because the chord you need to sever will feel just right.
When you have found it, determine where the cut should be made and then visualize the cord being cleanly cut. If you need assistance, Archangel Michael can be called upon to help you with his sword.
Afterward, if you feel that cutting the chord has left spaces in your energy field, then visualize those spaces being filled with healing sunlight.

There may be times where cutting a cord can help free a relative or loved one to reach new stages of growth. You’re not severing a relationship, but you are severing the cords that are no longer serving you both.
At other times, a cord may simply refuse to be cut because it is still serving a higher purpose. It is also important to remember that cutting a cord with someone is not a replacement for doing your emotional work with people. It can, however, be an enactment of that work upon its completion.
In any case, cutting a relationship cord should always be viewed as a positive and nurturing act. By cutting the cords that no longer need to be there, you are setting yourself and others free from the ties that bind.

My Personal Sputnik Moment Limned In Clarity

A Sputnik Moment is like a sudden meltdown.
I had an epiphany on 2 February 2011 after 3 hours of ruminating in the dark — it occurred at 5h35 that morning and was amazing! I felt I could cry but my eyes were bone dry.

Have you ever had a personal sputnik moment? Judith Rich's  fabulous post Embracing your personal sputnik moments not only gave me the idea for this post but also opened my eyes further to what's been happening in my "innards".

Personal Sputnik Moments are those large or small events that jar our sense of reality, perhaps ever so slightly, or land like a major earthquake. 

Her article is about us again and our angst and upheavals and the insight we gain when we pay attention. The title says it all and I strongly suggest that you read the entire article.

My sputnik moment — When you strive and struggle to do right, act right and go against your principles and get angry at yourself for doing it, just to keep the peace or you feel sorry for the sufferer, you feel worse.

That is because you are doing everything for the wrong reason and the result can only be negative.

Striving and struggling are dis-empowering actions and only result in negativity until you understand the "why" of it all. Stop reacting. Stop doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. That never works and is called insanity.

Sputnik Moments come like surprises that stir things up and force us to reevaluate how we see ourselves and our version of the world.

When you are blind-sided by energy vampires you feel incredibly hurt incredulous that "they" found a chink in your armor.

Your energy field absorbs that shit by the way and it is amplified by your intense emotional reaction and your face tenses up, even though you say nothing.

That spell of clarity negated most of my anger.


...these kinds of moments are not always harbingers of bad news. Sputnik Moments can come on the heels of good news too.

You have to uncover what you are denying which is encouraging the attacks and root it out! Those false beliefs planted in your subconscious by your parents and who has their finger on the trigger, every single time... you got it, the family.

My resentment over the fact that I seemed unable to obtain a steady job which I liked and also paid me what I desired to enable me to get my own place.

A Sputnik Moment can be the realization of the role you played in the unfolding of events. 
Amazing FlowersImage by puritani35 via FlickrThat was my weak point and therefore, I was vulnerable and it kept me in re-action mode which enraged me. Vicious cycle is what you fall into when you deceive yourself into thinking, as I did, that I wasn't bothered by the pointed question.

My point here is that my feeling of despair, rage at them and even more rage at my feeling of helplessness and desperation, is what fuelled the fires of venom that kept being spewed in my face.
Sputnik Moments can open our eyes to a deeper reality about who we are and what's really going on. The truth is, there's nobody else out there.
I experienced my personal sputnik moment after waking at 2.00AM and lying there running everything through my mind. That clarity in the dark seemed to cast a halo of light around everything in the dark room!

Stop fighting, work on your low self-esteem and defeatism, accept them for who they are, and recognise that nothing you do or say will ever be enough because they are living who they are. They have no sense of self and just want what they want which is me to be who they choose me to be.
That is ugly and I categorically reject that in all its forms.

I mention this to no one except a little old lady who is in the twilight of her years and currently undergoing treatment for stomach cancer - she didn't make it though - yet she understood and encouraged me to be strong in spite of them!

Amazing FlowersImage by puritani35 via FlickrMy purpose in sharing this story is to say that we are never attacked unjustly. Even when we do not verbally react, emotionally we do and that is communicated which add fuel to the flame of discontent.

If you have not sorted and dumped the emotional baggage inherited from your birth family, they will always be able to trigger you and you also will end up living and reliving (ugh!) that dysfunction throughout your adult life.

Perhaps our ultimate Sputnik Moment is the realization that we're all in this together, that nobody's going to get out of this alive so we might as well claim our brotherhood and sisterhood and get busy rowing the boat of human kindness, love and compassion. 

Dump your emotional garbage, it is toxic, before it does you in.

I have also accepted, finally, that we really are our brother's keeper, so don't hate. Love instead.

Love Is The Answer whether it be kindness, compassion and so on.

I kid you not, and I am not talking about blindly ignoring what is facing you and turning the other cheek. No, I am talking about holding them closest to you like your best friend.

And that means, establishing boundaries, being firm although some may call you harsh, when they cross the line. Stand your ground. Be who you are discovering yourself to be.

Why hold them close? Because they have something to show you, about yourself. It is impossible to discover who you are all on your own! Some or a lot may be unpalatable but take the medicine anyway.

Be Aware of your 'Angry Bull' Atractiveness

When there is no emotional charge behind the boundaries you establish to maintain your space, you will never be drawn into any conflictual situation nor will you be drawn into anyone's story.

It makes no sense to create barriers when you are mad as a hatter because not only will it be visibly obvious by your body language but you will also be radiating that anger.

That is the Law of Vibration at work - you get what you put out.

There is nothing better than this red flag to any angry 'bull' that crosses your path. You will also attract any person in your vicinity who is just looking to pick on someone and depending on your reaction, voila the fireworks.

The beauty here is that you can become aware of your angry bull attractiveness before the situation degenerates into verbal mudslinging and/or fighting.

I recently experienced this with an old woman. After her numerous verbal assaults and racist remarks I finally told her 3 months down the line that the next time she disrespects me I will 'cut her arse' meaning I will give her the beating of her life.

So said so done.

Five to ten minutes into the fracas I felt close to tears at the sudden understanding that although it was the last straw that broke me, my rage had little to do with her and more to do with how I was handling my living conditions and the conflicts therein. She was the conduit.

Clarity was crystal clear and it infuriated me so I still carried on for five more minutes and acted really really small.

Through boundaries you can still be pricked. Words will be seeded on the fertile terrain of your - in my case- self-disgust, anger and frustration and fear that I was not good enough to be employed at 53.

The only way to ensure there is no taint behind your personal boundary is to:
1- Be aware of the emotions you feel throughout the day. This way you will know when not to let yourself get caught up in someone else's story.
 
2- Think of your mind as a garden and start pulling weeds so that you can enjoy the flowering plants, trees and shrubs (thanks Deb Shapiro).
 
3- Practise meditation to encourage a peaceful inner world. The more you do it the firmer inner ground will be. 5 to 15 minutes a day, preferably first thing in the morning is perfect if you can make it. If not choose the calmest period for you. Make the choice.

4- Start looking for non-invasive techniques that support your desire to free yourself from the useless emotional baggage that pollutes your heart and mind.

Emotional Times On The Eve of Spring: A Sign of Good Things To Come

On reflection, I had to revise the opening lines of this post and its title when I understood on this first day of Spring that it is a sign of good things to come.

Cannot believe I didn't see that earlier.

Gotta clear out the garbage first in order to make space for the good stuff, right!

I need to let go of everything when this stuff hits the fan which includes my beautiful blog and just stick to the basics of eat, drink a lot of water, toilet stops, sleep, and a lot of meditation. It has taken me a long time to accept this.
Letting go enables me to find the self-knowledge I seek, when I stop fighting it.

Here is a wonderful reminder about controlling our emotions – from Napoleon Hill –  I found it in my mailbox on exiting the “cave” (bedroom) of my self-imposed exile. Synchronicity at work, for sure!

He clearly explains what I was living and what I needed to grasp about an extremely unhappy and tortured soul – my birth mother – who was pursuing with zeal her latest attempt to bring me (me!) under her control once more.

You can't control others’ acts, but you can control your reaction to their acts, and that is what counts most to you.

No one can make you feel any negative emotion -- fear, anger, or inferiority -- without your express permission.

There will always be people who find perverse enjoyment in upsetting others, or who simply play upon your emotions so that they can use you for their own selfish purposes. Whether or not they are successful depends entirely upon you and how you react to their negative behaviors.

When you are forced to deal with such people, recognize from the outset that they are trying to upset you, not because of something you may have done to them, but because of some problem they have with themselves. Tell yourself, "This isn't about me. I will not allow this person to upset me. I am in control of my emotions and my life." 

Synchronicity always shows up to say "you are on the right path" and I am so damn grateful to the Universe/Source for that!

I am learning how to let go and allow others to do, say or have whatever they want without letting it get to me and  EFT tapping with Carol Look provided me with five keys.

The five “keys” that cleared my energy blockages and allowed love to reign in my world were:

March 13th at the Reykjavik Botanincal Gardens.

1– seeing the energetic invitations as occasions to transform my conflicts into opportunities;

2– admitting my impatience with what is not happening fast enough for me (instead of stifling it) – thus releasing the energy blockage;

3– completely accepting yourself and everything as it is right now;

4– learning how to send love now to my problems – be they people or situations – especially when I/we don’t want to; this is another form of acceptance.

5– learning to fall in love today (with something or someone) that is creating the problem. This is particularly powerful.
Abundance is mine (and yours) by right — I hope you all know that — and I am not just talking about money. We need it but it makes up only a small fraction of abundance!

I am very grateful to Gary Craig, founder of the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT).  I would not have made this transformation without it.

It is very important to offer gratitude for what’s good in your life. Remember that!

The outcome of my two week "workshop" on matricidal thoughts, resentment and emotional self-flagellation can be boiled down to this:

~Criticising someone means you are really criticising yourself. You will never get clear of those thorn bushes until you shut up mentally, stand still and stop fighting.

~Going within to stillness and laying down the burdens of your heart mutes the noise. A wonderful silence resounds from which arises the only thing that is important – the beating of your heart pulsing in rhythm with Source.
~When you become one with all that is in the quiet moments between the beats, everything else becomes irrelevant. The more often you retreat to the cathedral of your heart, the less important who says or did what becomes.
 
~We are all here to learn and trespassing those silently forbidden family barriers erected in childhood and facing and accepting them is essential.

~We are always too close to the issue when it is personal. When you step back, you see with such clarity that you are able to drop the defensive posture because you have nothing to defend yourself against. There never was! The crappy false beliefs embedded in your subconscious were running the show.
 
~Defensive re-actions fall by the wayside when you then act in line with your soul's desires i.e. with love and integrity in every area of your life.
~Accept responsibility for yourself and your actions — that is all that is required — and contentiousness melts away. The ego does not give up that easily eh, so be prepared for the old nagging thoughts to cross your mind now and again.  Ignore them and they fade away or thinking of something else works just as well.

And I don’t care what anyone says, feelings come before the thought because it is your soul talking. As David Cameron Gikandi says in A Happy Pocket Full of Money, “there is a big difference between emotions and feelings” and you must learn the difference.

If you can remember just one thing from this post, it should be this: Not only does what we resist persist but also, whatever we do that goes against our character and natural generosity hurts us when we resist it.

Completely Accepting Yourself Is The Only Choice — Try The EFT Way

 I subscribe to the Attracting Abundance newsletter from Master EFT practitioner Carol Look's and she has a superb article on Complete Acceptance in no. 170.

From the opening lines in her article I was hooked because it was exactly what I was working on now – completely accepting myself and my situation as is.

Although I waver and hover according to my mood, I know that completely accepting yourself is the only choice there is. 

What I love about Carol is that she always includes an EFT script so that we can work on the particular issue she discusses in her newsletter.

Obviously, you can also read Complete Acceptance on Carol's blog but I just have to share it here as well. I think all of us need this reinforcement most of the time...

For those new to the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), go ahead, try the EFT way. It is powerful, effective and non-invasive. I advise you however to follow the links in Carol's article to her site, and you have to take responsibility for your own well-being because EFT works by uncovering hidden emotional trauma.

If you are therefore not prepared to deal with whatever arises on your own, do not start. You can of course, contact an EFT practioner in your area. Also, learn EFT and how it could benefit you.


COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE


What if we could "deeply and completely accept" ourselves as we are without pushing, trying, changing or striving...

No doubt many of you recognize this phrase from basic EFT - "Even though I have this problem, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."  There are 2 critical questions regarding acceptance:

(1) Why is it so hard to do?  And

(2) What's the point of doing it?

Complete acceptance of ourselves is not only difficult, it is actually quite rare.  We can try to accept and talk as if we accept ourselves, but truly accepting where we are emotionally is challenging.

And there is definitely a paradox about self acceptance - we often fear accepting ourselves because we think it will make us stuck, keep us where we are - but completely accepting ourselves does just the opposite - it allows room for us to change!


What if you could completely accept yourself where you are, what would that be like for you?

What would that feel like to you? What would happen to you?  There are evidently some very challenging responses to these questions - surprising emotions surface around the idea of deeply and completely accepting ourselves.
 
I have found in myself and others that it is hard to accept ourselves because we have been taught not to... and there is a common fear that if we accept ourselves, we will lose the desire to do better in the future.  As I said earlier, we're afraid that complete acceptance will cause us to be static, or too comfortable with the place we're in rather than striving for more.

The point of deeply and completely accepting ourselves is that this process is peace-giving, joyful, and makes us more "attractive" to the universe when we are asking for what we want.  Many of us have been taught the opposite - try harder, push harder, don't accept anything you don't want and you will progress forward.  Oddly, the opposite is true.

CLEARING CONFLICTS

This newsletter is yet another opportunity to clear any of your conflicts about being outrageously abundant in every part of your life.  Are you ready to do some clearing?  Answer the following questions about deeply and completely accepting yourself  where you are...
   
(1) What's the "downside" to completely accepting yourself right where you are?

 I'll have to stop fighting then what would i do to get what I want

(2) What's the "upside" to remaining in a state of not accepting yourself or your feelings?

I feel as if i'm doing something constructive to acheive more.

(3) How does it serve you to not accept yourself?  What are the benefits?
 more difficulty, more uncomfortable striving and fighting ang angst - IS THAT WHAT I REALLY WANT???!!!!! - that is my programming and it is time to overwrite it!

These are all powerful questions that I recommend you answer as honestly as possible.  Once you know the upside of not accepting yourself or the downside of accepting yourself completely, you can tap on the blocks and change your energy to enjoy congruence with a successful life.


It's your choice... Choose to embrace and accept yourself exactly where you are, deeply and completely, without trying to change or be different and enjoy your new vibration!

The reason this process is so important is because it's a key ingredient to changing - but, the process of accepting ourselves seems to make us feel that we will not change, that we will become stuck instead.  The opposite is true, that's the paradox - when we accept ourselves as we are, the resistance falls away and we move towards changing for the better!

YES...BUT

So it's time for the yes, but section of my newsletter to help identify what we need to clear out of our energy systems with EFT. Here are some typical yes, buts that surface when I ask people to consider what it would be like to deeply and completely accept themselves as they are and actually be with themselves:

I don't accept who I am right now, I  want to change, so why should I accept the parts of me I don't want anymore?  Because accepting all of you releases emotional and energetic resistance in your body and mind... that's what we need to do to move forward.

(2) Yes, but... I don't want to be complacent or lazy by just accepting myself - isn't it important to continue to strive to be better?  It's important to want to do better, but striving and trying are "pushing against" vibrations... acceptance doesn't cause laziness or complacency... it causes relaxation and allows creativity to blossom.

(3) Yes, but... I don't feel safe when I think of deeply and completely accepting myself, it feels somehow indulgent to me. Why don't you feel safe when you think of self-acceptance? Who taught you that accepting yourself was bad or dangerous in some way?  These are all "tappable" issues.

(4) Yes, but... I think it's a waste of time to accept myself, and time's short right now, I have to hurry and change!  Whenever we are in an allowing emotional state such as deep acceptance, it is not a waste of time.  In fact, it can speed up the manifestation process and save you time!

The good news is that you can treat whichever yes, buts you have with basic EFT tapping!


FAVORITE BENEFITS

(1) Being able to completely accept yourself...  will get you in congruence with what you want, which means the Universe can "hear" your vibration more completely.
 
(2) Being able to deeply and completely accept yourself will allow the Law of Attraction to deliver to you more of what you want - you are releasing resistance, which is the only thing between you and what you want. (Remember, the Law of Attraction "hears" your vibration, not your words, so imagine what it will "hear" when you are already releasing resistance by accepting who you are and how you feel.)

(3) Being able to deeply and completely accept yourself now will bring you peace and quiet from that mind chatter that disturbs your serenity... imagine the power...

(4) Being able to deeply and completely accept yourself  will immediately release a great deal of  "resistance" in your body and mind.  When you are no longer resistant, surprise channels of abundance open up for you.

As Law of Attraction teachers say -- it's all energy.  So change your energy by being inspired to accept yourself, deeply and completely - even though there are parts you want to change! This  will automatically invite the Universe to help you create more abundance right now.

Raise your vibration by choosing to completely accept yourself, and enjoy the abundance you want in your life right now!

Remember, the Law of Attraction sends you situations that have the same energy of the vibration you are putting out... so when you are already feeling joyful by accepting yourself deeply and completely, the Universe will bring you more opportunities for abundance.

Chin: "Part of me is afraid to accept all of me, what if I get stuck?"
Collarbone: "I'm afraid this is the wrong direction for me to go."
Under Arm: "What if this slows down my attraction process?"
Head: "Acceptance is so different from what I was taught."

Eyebrow: "What if deep acceptance has been the missing piece for me?"
Side of Eye: "I wonder if deep acceptance is good for my body and mind."
Under Eye: "I'm willing to try to accept all of me right now."
Nose: "I intend to accept all of me right now."
Chin: "I choose to feel accepting of all of me, even the parts I don't like."
Collarbone: "I'm ready to completely accept myself now."
Under Arm: "I appreciate all of me, even the parts I want to change."
Head: "I love feeling happy in my self acceptance, knowing I am releasing resistance."

GOOD NEWS: Be Inspired: Lose Your Emotional Baggage and Rediscover Yourself

I first discovered Jill Bolte Taylor at the TED Talks Conference in California in 2008.

She describes so eloquently, calmly and analytically yet passionately, as the brain scientist she is, "how to lose your emotional baggage and rediscover yourself" as she did in 1996 after a stroke in her left brain. Be inspired. Not that I'm encouraging anyone to have a stroke!


It took her eight years to come back to herself as you see her in the 2008 video below. She had to learn how to speak again (literally relearning her ABCs), how to walk, how to do all the mundane things which we take for granted.

I do not believe it is coincidental that a brain scientist has a stroke and is able to give a blow-by-blow account as it happened; do you? 

Her description of living in her right brain (creative hemisphere) will blow your mind if you haven't heard about her or seen the video before.  And if you have, take another look and listen and feel it this time. The message is clear.


In fact, what Jill Bolte Taylor describes as her connection with "all that is" is similar to what some people experience on occasion through meditation and spiritual cleansing.

After such experiences you are never the same again.

My purpose in posting this is to remind you all that there is always hope even in the darkest of times. It is in those moments that you must persevere; never give up!

Her book A Stroke of Insight must be read and kept on your coffee table or by your bedside. Everything about her experience and the aftermath is described in breathtaking detail in this small book.


So when you start feeling helpless and discouraged pick up her Stroke of Insight and open it on any page, and be inspired to try again. That's my urging to you and I today.

Schlepping to The Well of Stillness and Hoping It's Not Dry

I recently experienced this running away from myself that Martha Beck talks about in Becoming Still


I thought I didn't know how to handle a situation that unreasonably terrorized me. So I found myself schlepping to my stillness well, as I call it, to get some help because no one and nothing outside of me was able to.
 

My Mother's Habits


The worst part is that this fear has always been with me; and it was shocking to realise how much I had patterned my reactions on my mother's habits observed as a child.


We were very poor for a few years after the father of her four children walked out. She had no money, a huge house and 4 small children and one adolescent to care for. I have never been in her situation yet I react as she did then, whenever money is an issue. Is that scary or what!



Whining
 
Of course, logic dictates that there is always a solution to a problem. I knew that if I spent some quiet time and reconnected with Source I would be able tap into my well of stillness. But I kept avoiding that. Like a lot of people, it's hard getting off the rocky path once you set foot upon it.
 
But I could not continue like that indefinitely. It is impossible to maintain such a high level of fear which makes you desperate. It was do or die. So I decided to do something, anything. 
I was fed up with whining; I hate whining - even my own!  




I accepted Canfield's premise that if I changed my reaction (R) to the event (E) I would get a different outcome (O) - (E + R = O).

I had finally accepted full responsibility for my actions regardless of how it came about. 


So what was the problem again?

Fear of not being enough, lack of self worth... never tackled until now. All coming from lessons learnt observing my mother more than forty years ago! That was my running away story folks.
